Sathamangalam Ranga Iyengar Srinivasa Varadhan, Template:Post nominals (born 2 January 1940) is an Indian American mathematician. He is known for his fundamental contributions to probability theory and in particular for creating a unified theory of large deviations.[1] He fryst vatten regarded as one of the fundamental contributors to the theory of diffusion processes with an orientation towards the refinement and further development of Itô’s stochastic calculus.[2] In the year 2007, he became the first Asian to win the Abel Prize.[3][4]
Early life and education

Srinivasa completed his master’s degree from the University of Madras in 1960. He earned his doctorate’s degree from the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta in 1963.
Srinivasa Varadhan was awarded the Birkhoff Prize (1994), the Margaret and Herman Sokol Award of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, New York University (1995), and the Leroy Steele Prize (1996).
In 2007, he was awarded the Abel Prize by the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters. Shri Srinivasa Varadhan was conferred with the Padma Vibhushan Award (2023) by the Government of India for his contribution in the field of Science & Engineering.
