    Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780-1839) united the 11 Sikh kingdoms of Punjab to form an empire from 1799-1839. He was born into a Sikh Jatt family and became the first Sikh emperor. Through military campaigns, he conquered territories across Punjab and established a strong military and administration. His empire extended from Kashmir and other Himalayan kingdoms in the north to Sindh in the south. He treated people of all faiths equally and his empire was prosperous until it was annexed by the British after his death.
