    Sarah Frances Whiting (August 23, 1847 – September 12, 1927) was an American physicist and astronomer. She was the first professor of physics and astronomy at Wellesley College, where she taught for over 30 years. At Wellesley College, Whiting instructed several notable astronomers and physicists, including Annie Jump Cannon. Whiting was one of the founders and the first director of the Whitin Observatory.

    Whiting was interested from an early age in science by her father, who taught natural philosophy. Whiting graduated from Ingham University in 1865, after which she taught at a girls' secondary school in Brooklyn.[1]

    Early Life

    Sarah Frances Whiting was born August 23, 1847, in Wyoming, New York. Her parents were Joel Whiting and Elizabeth Lee (Comstock) Whiting; her mother's heritage included seventeenth-century settlers of Connecticut and Long Island and her father's lineage traced to pioneers in Vermont. Her father was a highly educated and decidedly enlightened man untainted by the sexist stereotypes of his time. He graduated from Hamilton College and acted as both principle and teacher in various academies in New York state. He taught physics (called Natural Philosophy at the time) and mathematics.     Sarah M. Whiting (born 1964) is an American architect, critic, and academic administrator. Whiting is currently Dean and Josep Lluís Sert Professor of Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design, in addition to being a founding partner of WW Architecture, along with her husband, Ron Witte. She previously served as Dean and William Ward Watkin Professor of Architecture at Rice School of Architecture. In addition to her work as an academic administrator, Whiting is most commonly identified as an intellectual figure within the field of architecture's "post-critical" turn in the early 2000s.
