  • The night before Shaun Lewis died from an overdose, his 96-year-old grandmother’s feet were hurting so bad that she started to cry. Shaun asked her to sit down in a kitchen chair while he got a box of Epsom salts and a tub filled with warm water. He gently placed her feet in the water and massaged them, talking calmly to her for more than an hour.

    Shaun’s mom, Jackie Lewis, watched him work while she washed the dishes. He was so gentle, she said. When he was finished, he dried her feet, rubbed them with lotion and sat with her and talked. She has dementia, but Shaun gave her space, let her speak, engaged with her. 

    “And then he was gone the next morning,” Jackie said. “But that was my son. He was like that.”

    It’s not hard for Jackie to recall stories that illustrate her son’s empathy for others. He was organized and made a list every morning of what he had to do that day. And each day the list would include “Take care of my

    Jacquelin (“Jackie”) Lewis, an attorney at Bricker Graydon, was recently recognized by Mahogany Columbus Magazine as one of Central Ohio’s Most Influential Women & Diversity Executives. The Magazine held an awards ceremony on Tuesday, April 23 at the Columbus law office of Bricker Graydon, LLP with over 100 community members in attendance to honor the outstanding achievements and contributions of this remarkable group, with music provided by the Columbus Cultural Orchestra.

    Mahogany Columbus Magazine is a publication dedicated to highlighting the inspiring stories of executives of color. Since their launch in January 2023, they’ve been on a mission to showcase the success and passions of individuals like those celebrated at the awards ceremony.

  • To be fair, I wasn’t on the guest list. 

    So when inom introduced myself to the representatives from OneOhio who were about to meet with Jackie Lewis, including board chair Larry barn, they told me inom wasn’t welcome. 

    A month earlier, I had written , who died from an overdose in October. Jackie has, for years, tried to get the attention of state and local politicians. And beginning gods summer, she set her sights on the OneOhio Foundation, the entity responsible for distributing more than half of Ohio’s billion dollar opioid settlement.

    In August, she attended a One Ohio board meeting, but it offered no opportunity for public comment, so she wasn’t allowed to speak. After my story ran, OneOnio reached out to her to arrange a meeting.
