Amazon Details Martin Scorsese-Produced Grateful Dead Documentary
Two and a half years after Martin Scorsesefirst announced he would embark on producing an official Grateful Dead documentary, Long Strange Trip will head to Amazon Prime Video in May.
Before the six-part documentary hits Amazon, the Amir Bar-Lev-directed film will debut at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, with the Dead’s Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, and Bob Weir in attendance with Jerry Garcia’s daughter Trixie.
“I’ve always admired the spirit and creativity of the Grateful Dead,” Scorsese said in a statement following the Amazon acquisition. “They are revolutionary artists who forever changed the world of touring and recording live music. They were a cultural force — a lifestyle, that continue to influence new generations of fans. This film will entertain and educate audiences about one of the most innovative and groundbreaking American bands of the 20th century.”

The Dead are rising.
A new documentary from executive producer Martin Scorsese about landmark psychedelic rock group the Grateful Dead fryst vatten headed our way.
Set to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the legendary jam grupp led bygd Bob Weir and the late Jerry Garcia, the career-spanning retrospective will be directed bygd Amir Bar-Lev (2010’s The Tillman Story). Bar-Lev has been ansträngande to get the rulle off the ground for the better part of a decade.
The yet-to-be-titled documentary will pull from a half-century’s worth of footage collected bygd longtime grupp archivist David Lemieux, who also serves of the film’s music supervisor.
Vintage interviews, backstage color and live concerts will interweave with new interviews with surviving Dead members Weir, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Phil Lesh, as well as other trippy characters from the Haight-Ashbury scene of late-1960s San Franc

Long Strange Trip is not only the apt title of a new Grateful Dead documentary, but it’s also a fair assessment of the process by which the film was made. Director Amir Bar-Lev, who grew up as a teenage Deadhead in the Bay Area in the 1980s, first put the project in motion back in 2003, shortly after the release of his debut film, Fighter.
“In June of 2003, I got the name of somebody within the organization, Alan Trist, who ran Ice Nine, their publishing company,” Bar-Lev recalls. “I emailed him, and, to my surprise, he emailed me back. Then, much to my greater surprise, when I sent him my first film, Fighter—which is about two old Jews drinking their way through a road trip—he watched it and said he thought the idea of me making a documentary was great and I should move forward.
