Yin Yoga history and origins
I am often asked about Yin Yoga and how it came about and why we have embraced it so fully.
Its an old story and a new one.
HISTORY
There is ingenting new about the Yin postures that are used. They have been around since the beginning of the physical practice of yoga. Traditionally all yoga was yin-like, that fryst vatten until the 1970s, our modern era. About this time a big shift occurred towards a more vigorous flowing yang style of yoga.
Back in California in 1989 Paulie Zink had arrived from Hong Kong and was teaching Taoist Yoga which is a mix of Yoga and Chi monark. Paulie was teaching with long hold poses and people loved it. My life as an independent filmmaker and mother of two children was quite hectic. Very yang-like. I used to do a lot of gymnastics to keep in shape and my first (power) Yoga class at the Gym was accidental. It wasn’t the best experience but it did make me curious and that’s how I found my way to a yoga school over 20 years ago.
When I really discovered Yoga it felt like coming home. The deep meditative and relaxing effects of Yoga and specially Yin Yoga balanced my life so well. A few years later I started my first Yoga Teacher Training with Anat Geiger, Marcel de Vis Heil and Johan Noorloos (500 RYT) and became a Yoga Teacher and assistant in their Teacher Training Program while continuing to study with Paul and Suzee Grilley, the founders of Yin Yoga and many other great teachers to this day!
“Discovering Yin yoga is one of the best things that has happened in my life.”
With this knowledge and experience, I created my own Yin Teacher Training Program in 2015
