American Civil War: Major General Don Carlos Buell
Born in Lowell, Ohio on March 23, 1818, Don Carlos Buell was the son of a successful farmer. Three years after his father's death in 1823, his family sent him to live with an uncle in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Educated at a local school where he showed an aptitude for mathematics, the young Buell also worked on his uncle's farm. Finishing his schooling, he succeeded in obtaining an appointment to the US Military Academy in 1837. A middling student at West Point, Buell struggled with excessive demerits and came close to being expelled on several occasions. Graduating in 1841, he placed thirty-second out of fifty-two in his class. Assigned to the 3rd US Infantry as a second lieutenant, Buell received orders which saw him travel south for service in the Seminole Wars. While in Florida, he displayed skill for administrative duties and enforcing discipline among his men.

Don Carlos Buell: Early Life and Military Service
The son of a successful farmer, Don Carlos Buell was born on March 23, 1818, in Lowell, Ohio. After his father’s death from cholera in 1823, Buell was sent to Lawrenceburg, Indiana, to be raised by his uncle, George Pearson Buell. With the help of his uncle’s business contacts, Buell secured an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1837. He graduated in 1841, ranking 32nd out of 52 cadets in a class that included future Civil War generals John F. Reynolds and Richard Garnett.

Don Carlos Buell (1818-1898) was a career U.S. Army officer who fought in the Seminole War, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War.
Buell, named for an uncle, was born on March 23, 1818 near Marietta, Ohio. His father was a prosperous farmer and a Catholic, and he died in 1823 in a cholera epidemis. In 1826 Don Carlos was sent to live with an uncle, a prominent farmer and merchant, in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Buell worked on the farm, but was also given a solid education in a local private school where he excelled in mathematics and horsemanship. His prosperous uncle procured for him admission to West Point where he spent 4 difficult years, coming very close several times to being expelled for excessive demerits, although his academic work was generally at a high level. Buell graduated from West Point in 1841 and was a company officer of infantry in the Seminole War of 1841-42 during which he demonstrated his remarkable administrative abilities
