    S. L. Narayanan is an Indian chess grandmaster who was born on January 10, , in Kerala. He won the Asian Junior Chess Championship in , after which he achieved the norm for the International Master title. In the same year, he also won the bronze medal in the World Junior Chess Championship. Narayanan was finally awarded the grandmaster title by FIDE in March He then went on to win the Kolkata International Grandmasters Open Chess Tournament in


    In addition to his chess playing career, Narayanan has also worked as a second to a few top Indian grandmasters, including Surya Shekhar Ganguly and P. Harikrishna. His career includes notable games against eminent players like Ruslan Ponomariov and Le Quang Liêm. In the FIDE World Cup, he had a strong performance, defeating several higher-rated players and reaching the fourth round, which was the best result achieved by an Indian player in that competition.

    S L Narayanan: A Grandmaster who fought his way to the top!

    Many years ago, when this youngster was a restless kid, his mother took him to her office on a day when she also happened to be playing a chess tournament. He sat near his mother’s board and watched her game intently. This was when one of her colleagues insisted that the child should try to learn the game. Fast forward to the present day and one realises that this was the moment when the chess bug struck S L Narayanan. Today, Narayanan is one of the top ten chess players in India and finds a place amongst top players in the world.
